Dear XX MP/MS/MLA

With higher energy bills and less support available for vulnerable households this winter, I am writing to you as my local MP, to ask for your support.

Please encourage the UK government to urgently make energy more affordable for low-income households. This can be achieved by extending current energy discounts and consulting on new mechanisms like a social tariff for energyLevels of energy debt are at record levels and will soar even higher with higher energy bills and less support. Ofgem and the UK government must work with the industry to support households to repay energy debt to put extra money back into people’s pockets and support local economies.

These measures are desperately needed by millions of the most vulnerable in our society who are badly struggling across the whole of the UK. In the longer term, our homes are the least efficient in Europe, meaning we are needing to spend much more money to keep warm. The UK government’s Warm Homes Plan must help fuel poor households.

Failing to act will leave the most vulnerable households in unimaginable positions, so concerned about their energy bills that they don’t switch their heating on at all. Young children, who aren’t able to eat a warm meal or bathe. People with medical issues so scared by soaring levels of energy debt they are turning down their heating to dangerous levels or not running medical equipment, despite it being potentially fatal or putting needless pressures on our already stretched health services.

The desperate consequences of unaffordable bills are entirely preventable. The solutions are known, and I urge you to do all that you can in Parliament to raise them on my behalf.

Yours sincerely,

Your name
