Understanding Fuel Poverty and Health
E-LEARNING – WEBINAR – IN-PERSON COURSE
The impacts of fuel poverty on health can be severe. This half-day course is designed for anyone wanting to learn more about fuel poverty and its links with physical and mental wellbeing.
Learners will be taught how to identify those likely to be at risk from fuel poverty and signpost to assistance.
This course is designed for frontline staff who work with vulnerable and low-income groups who are at risk from living in cold and damp homes. It covers the impacts that living in fuel poverty can have on our health.
The Understanding Fuel Poverty and Health course is designed to provide frontline staff working with vulnerable and low-income groups with information on identifying those likely to be at risk from fuel poverty and signpost to assistance.
During this course, we will:
- Identify different fuel poverty definitions
- Discuss the main risk factors that increase the chances of a household being in fuel poverty
- Evaluate the impact of the cold on health
- Explore the HIVE model for dealing with condensation
- Explain different sources of assistance and advice
- The Low Income Low Energy Efficiency Indicator and the causes of fuel poverty
- How to identify those at risk of fuel poverty using risk factors and triggers
- The health impacts of fuel poverty and damp homes
- Heat loss within the home
- The causes of condensation dampness/ mould and remedial actions that can be taken
- Assistance and sources of advice available to those struggling to heat their home adequately – including the Affordable Warmth Obligation of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) and the fuel suppliers’ hardship funds for those struggling to pay their energy costs

This course is available online via webinar or e-learning and can also be delivered in person upon request.
The duration of the tutor-led webinar and in-person course is 2.5 hours.
The e-learning takes approximately 2 hours to complete however each learner is different and e-learning offers the flexibility to study at your own pace. Learners will have access to the course for four weeks from their selected start date.

Our e-learning courses are self‑led, allowing learners to study at a time and place that suits them.
Learners can book via the link at the bottom of this page. Once registered, they will have four weeks’ access to the course content, enabling them to progress through the material at their own pace and fit learning around other commitments.
The course features audio throughout and incorporates a range of engaging learning tools, including videos and interactive activities, to support effective learning.
Tutor support is also available on request throughout the learning period.
Webinars are delivered live by our expert tutors and designed for small groups, ensuring a high level of interaction, engaging activities, and support throughout.
We typically use Zoom for our online sessions.
To join, learners will need a device with internet access and sound capability, along with a microphone and webcam to enable full participation.
We offer a programme of open access webinar dates for individuals to book onto. Once booked, learners should receive a confirmation of booking e-mail. Joining instructions will be sent the week before the course.

You can book up to 20 e-learning places using the standard booking form. For larger bookings, please contact us to discuss options.
We offer organisational e-learning licences for organisations with a larger number of staff to train. These licences provide unlimited learner access for either 6 months or 12 months.
An organisational licence includes:
- A tailored version of the course customised specifically for your organisation
- Two bespoke slides within the course to include organisation-specific information, such as local schemes, contact details or internal processes
- The option to purchase additional tailored slides if required
- The ability to nominate an administrator, who will have access to reporting on learner activity

There are no set dates for e-learning modules, learners choose when they would like to start on their booking form, and we send the course login details to match.

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be able to download a certificate of completion for their CPD records.
