Using Energy in the Home CQ11640 (Level 1)

This Level 1 course provides a clear and accessible introduction to understanding and managing energy use in the home.

With a focus on practical topics, advice and information, learners explore how energy is used domestically, including appliance running costs, energy meters and statements, and simple energy efficiency measures. The course also looks ahead, introducing learners to renewable options for homes.

Designed for learners of all ages, the course supports the development of confidence and independence in managing or discussing household energy use. On successful completion, learners can achieve the Using Energy in the Home CQ11640 (Level 1) qualification while gaining essential knowledge and skills to support independent living.

Designed for both pre‑16 and post‑16 learners working at Level 1, this course provides an accessible introduction for individuals and organisations seeking to improve employability in the growing energy sector. It is also well suited to learners who wish to build confidence and develop positive engagement with learning.

On completion of the course, learners will achieve a Level 1 qualification and gain essential knowledge and practical skills to support independent living, particularly in understanding, managing and confidently discussing domestic energy use.

Unit content

UNIT 1 – Understanding how we use Energy at Home

  • Recognise that different types of fuel are used in the home
  • Examine the energy consumption of electrical appliances
  • Identify meters by type
  • Understand how to read meters
  • Recognise the benefits of smart meters

UNIT 2 – Adding up the Cost of Energy Use at Home

  • Understand the layout of an energy statement
  • Recognise energy use from meter readings
  • Recognise information on a fuel statement
  • Describe different ways of paying for fuel
  • Examine actions for reducing energy waste at home

UNIT 3 – Heating rooms and heating water at home

  • Identify a range of appliances for heating rooms
  • Recognise ways of heating water at home
  • Identify typical space heating and water heating controls
  • Explain the purpose of space heating and water heating controls

UNIT 4 – Keeping Warm at Home

  • Examine where heat escapes from a home
  • Recognise how insulation prevents heat loss
  • Understand how to insulate against heat loss
  • Understand why we should insulate against heat loss

UNIT 5 – Going green with low carbon energy sources and heating

  • Recognise renewable, low carbon sources of electricity
  • Understand how low carbon electricity can benefit the environment
  • Examine low carbon heat technologies for homes
  • Recognise the benefits and drawbacks of low carbon heat technologies in homes

The course requires no prior knowledge of the subject.

Our e-learning courses are self‑led, allowing learners to study at a time and place that suits them.

Once registered, learners will have ten weeks’ access to the course content, enabling them to progress through the course material and assessments at their own pace and fit learning around other commitments.

The units feature audio throughout and incorporate a range of engaging learning tools, including videos and interactive activities, to support effective learning.

Tutor support is also available on request throughout the learning period.

There are no set dates, learners choose when they would like to start on their booking form, and we send the course login details to match.

At present, there are no funded places available for this course.

Learners will have the opportunity to complete a short assessment for each unit. On successful completion of all five units and their associated assessments, learners will achieve the Using Energy in the Home (CQ11640) Level 1 NCFE qualification.

The assessments are open book format and will be provided to learners via e-mail or as a printed hard copy. There are no fixed exam dates; learners may complete each assessment at a time that suits them and submit their responses when ready.

The assessment will include a range of multiple-choice style questions, matching exercises and true/ false questions.

The recommended study time for each assessment is one hour. Further details are outlined above.

This qualification has been accredited as a Customised Qualification, and we have benchmarked the qualification’s learning outcomes and assessment criteria at Level 1 to allow you to demonstrate the difficulty and depth of study.

NCFE is an awarding organisation recognised by the qualification regulators for England (Ofqual), Wales (Qualifications Wales) and Northern Ireland (CCEA Regulation). This is an unregulated qualification and is not a nationally recognised qualification
