FUEL POVERTY AND FAMILIES – PRACTICAL SUPPORT FOR HEALTHIER HOMES

The Warm Start, Healthy Futures course will provide insight into the impact of living in cold homes due to fuel poverty on expectant individuals and children.
It will cover the health, educational, and social impacts, supported by research carried out by National Energy Action and other organisations.
The course will also provide practical energy efficiency advice and signpost participants to relevant referral pathways.
The course is designed for frontline staff and volunteers who work with expectant parents and families with children up to 16 years of age, both in educational, healthcare, community and advice settings.
This course aims to equip learners with the ability to recognise the impacts of living in cold homes on expectant individuals and children and identify support available.
- Explain the causes of fuel poverty and risk factors
- Explore the health impacts on pregnant individuals and children living in a cold home
- Discuss how to avoid wasting energy in the home and maximise energy efficiency
- Signpost relevant support pathways
- Introduction to fuel poverty
- Health impacts of fuel poverty, including physical, mental and carbon monoxide health risks on pregnant individuals and children
- Impacts of living in cold homes on children’s education supported by research carried out by National Energy Action
- Tips for reducing condensation, managing energy costs and improving energy efficiency
- Extra support such as the Priority Services Register and where to find more information as well as providing a referral pathway

2.5 hours – a short comfort break will be included during the course.
The course is generally delivered online via webinar but can also be delivered in-person upon request.

Webinars are delivered live by our expert tutors and designed for small groups, ensuring a high level of interaction, engaging activities, and support throughout.
We typically use Zoom for our online sessions.
To join, learners will need a device with internet access and sound capability, along with a microphone and webcam to enable full participation.
Once booked, learners should receive a confirmation of booking e-mail. Joining instructions will be sent the week before the course.

Funded places are available to non-commercial/ not for profit organisations based in England and Wales (such as local authorities, housing associations, advice agencies etc). Learners must also be frontline staff or volunteers that work with expectant parents and families with children aged 16 and under.
After the session, learners will receive a handout booklet summarising and reinforcing the key topics covered during the course.
All courses and processes are assessed in line with BSI ISO 9001 quality management standards.
